For The Love of Art - Daphne Bugeja

Daphne Bugeja completed her architecture degree at The University of Malta in 2013 and furthered her studies at Politecnico di Milano (Italy). This not only helped her expand her knowledge, but also fueled her passion for drawing, driving her to develop an important niche in architecture. Daphne is a practicing architect in Malta, having worked in the residential, arts and commercial sectors for over a decade. For Daphne, sketching was always an essential medium to use when words weren’t enough. Examining urban cityscapes that she visited in the past years cou-pled with Bugeja’s freehand illustrative explorations of detailed architecture led to the birth of ‘inka’.

Her artwork is mostly based on observations on both local and international architecture. Although her works are not only based on local landmarks, Maltese landmarks are her favourite, being rich in planning, heritage and construction. The latter, being a very sensitive topic, gives her the right energy to frame our heritage and hope to raise awareness about conserving what others have built and keeping it alive from one generation to another. Studying architecture helped Daphne to develop free hand sketching which resulted to be the main and only medium used in my drawings. Through a light weight effect, created using free hand line drawings, I aim to better understand the complexity of architecture, and paradoxically break it down into simple lines and shapes.
